A thermal power plant buys coal by the tonne and sells power by the unit, and the gap between the two is where money leaks. Fuel arrives by rake and truck, travels on conveyors to the bunkers, and every tonne and every calorie in it affects the cost of each unit generated. Short-weighed coal, or coal with less heat than paid for, shows up as a worse heat rate.

Coal is weighed at the gate, on the belts and in the bunkers, and tested in the lab. HSCo supplies all of it, so the tonnes and the calories come from equipment you can check.

Paying for tonnes and calories
Coal is paid for by weight but burned for its heat, so a plant needs both numbers it can defend. Weigh every truck on a checked weighbridge, measure the belt to the bunkers, and test samples in your own lab with a calorimeter and a muffle furnace for ash. When the supplier’s figures and yours differ, your own measured tonnes and calorific values are what settle it.
Fly ash, limestone and lime
A power plant also handles fly ash going out and limestone or lime coming in for flue-gas treatment, and each has a silo that needs a true stock figure. Load cell modules under those silos show the weight regardless of how the powder settles or bridges. Fly ash sold to cement makers and brick plants leaves by truck, so the dispatch weighbridge matters as much as the coal weighbridge.
