A sugar mill’s biggest bill is the cane, and the cane is paid by weight. In the crushing season hundreds of carts, tractors and trucks queue at the gate, every farmer is paid on the weighbridge ticket, and a slow or disputed weighbridge backs up the whole yard. At the other end, sugar is bagged in 50 kg bags that have to hold 50 kg.

Getting through the crushing season
The weighbridge is the bottleneck of a sugar mill in season. Two things keep it moving: enough weighing capacity for the peak (often a second weighbridge or an in-motion weighbridge for the fastest lane), and a weighbridge that doesn’t stop. Have it serviced and checked with test weights before crushing starts, keep a spare indicator and load cell on site, and use a display the drivers can read so arguments are settled at the bridge rather than at the office.
Molasses and the distillery
Molasses is a valuable by-product, and it sits in tanks that are hard to dip accurately because of its thickness. Weighing the tank with load cell modules under its legs gives the real stock at any time, and weighing tankers on the way out settles what was sold. For a mill with its own distillery, the same tank weighing tracks what goes in to fermentation.
