Weighing Scales for the Iron, Steel & Metal Industry

Walk through an iron or steel plant and count the places where metal gets weighed. Scrap and sponge iron come in by truck. The furnace charge is made up by weight. Ladles are weighed hot, billets and coils are weighed cold, and every bundle of TMT bars leaves with a weighbridge ticket. Get one of those numbers wrong and you either give steel away or spend a week arguing with a customer about it.

Hindustan Scale Company (HSCo) has made weighing scales in Mumbai since 1955, and we make or supply a scale for every one of those jobs, from the weighbridge at the gate to the balance in the QC lab. Where a steel plant weighs, and with what

• Scrap and raw material coming in – every truck of scrap, sponge iron, ore or coal crosses a weighbridge. We build them from 10 t to 120 t. If you don’t want trucks to stop, an in-motion weighbridge weighs them at up to 20 km/h, up to 150 t. Where there’s no room for a pit, portable axle weigh pads do the job.
• Charge make-up at the furnace – the charge is weighed before it goes in, on a crane scale above the charging bucket or on a platform scale for smaller lots. Close to the furnace, the crane scale needs a heat shield.
• Ladle and casting – a ladle is weighed either hanging from the crane with a heat-resistant crane scale, or standing on a ladle car fitted with ladle load cells.
• Rolling mill, wire rod and coils – billets, bars and coils go on crane scales, or on a coil weighing platform with cradle rails so a coil can’t roll off. Heavy-duty platform scales take bundles up to 5 t.
• Stores and dispatch – pallet scales weigh while the load is being moved, bench scales handle spares and small parts, and the weighbridge prints the final ticket. The weight can go straight into your ERP, Tally or SAP.
• QC and metallurgy lab – tensile testing machines, muffle furnaces up to 1,600 °C, atomic absorption spectrophotometers for metals, precision balances, and certified test weights to check every scale in the plant.
