At a port, weight decides what can be lifted, stacked and loaded. Every container and every lift has a weight that has to be known, trucks queue at the gate to be weighed in and out, and a load that’s heavier than declared is a danger to the crane, the ship and everyone underneath. Load testing cranes and lifting gear
Cranes, hoists and slings have to be proof-load tested, and the test is only as good as the weight reading. A wireless dynamometer or heavy crane scale between the hook and the test load shows the applied load on a handheld display at a safe distance, with peak hold so the maximum is captured. HSCo’s range runs from 2 t wireless dynamometers to 300 t heavy crane scales.
Container weights before loading
International shipping rules require the verified gross mass of every packed export container before it’s loaded on a ship. It can be found by weighing the whole packed container on a checked weighbridge or with a crane scale, or by weighing all the contents and adding the container’s tare. Either way the weighing equipment has to be accurate and checked. HSCo weighbridges, heavy crane scales and test weights cover both methods.
