Paint is a recipe, and the recipe is weighed. Resins, pigments, solvents and additives go into the mixer by weight, the colour depends on grams of tinter, and the finished tins are filled to a declared quantity. Get a pigment addition wrong and the whole batch is off-shade. Get the solvent area wrong and the scale is a fire risk.

Small additions, big effects
In a paint batch, a few hundred grams of pigment can decide the shade of several thousand litres. That’s why the scale for additions matters more than the scale for the base. Use a scale sized to the addition, not the batch, and let it stop the addition at the set weight with a relay rather than relying on someone watching the display. Record every addition, so an off-shade batch can be traced back in minutes.
Solvent areas
Solvent handling areas are usually classified, and an ordinary scale doesn’t belong there. HSCo supplies an explosion-proof style platform scale and builds custom explosion-proof scales to your capacity and outputs. Send us the zone and gas group, and we’ll confirm the certification with the order.
Filling tins to the declared quantity
Paint is sold in litres, but it’s filled and checked most accurately by weight. Knowing the density of each product, set the fill weight for each tin size and let a relay-output scale stop the filler at that weight. Check a few tins every hour on a bench scale that’s been checked with a test weight that morning, and record the results. Scales used to check declared quantities have to be Legal Metrology stamped.
