A research chemist weighing reference standards needs a balance that reads to hundredths of a milligram. A formulation lab making 100 g batches needs a milligram. A stores room issuing reagents by the gram needs neither. Buying too fine wastes money and patience, because a 5-digit balance is slower and fussier than you need for everyday work.

• 5 digit, 0.01 mg – semi-micro balances for reference standards and very small samples.
• 4 digit, 0.1 mg – analytical balances, the workhorse of chemistry and pharma labs.
