Lab Instruments for Water Testing Labs
Water testing is a long list of parameters, and each one needs its own instrument. pH, conductivity, turbidity and colour are quick. BOD runs for days in an incubator: 3 days at 27 °C under the Indian method, IS 3025 (Part 44), or 5 days at 20 °C under APHA. COD needs a digester and a titration or photometer, dissolved oxygen is read with a probe or by Winkler titration, and microbiology needs an autoclave, incubators and a clean bench. Drinking water, effluent and process water each have their own limits, and the lab has to report against all of them.

Getting BOD results you can trust
BOD is the test most likely to go wrong, because the incubator has to hold one temperature for days: 27 ± 1 °C for 3 days under the Indian method, IS 3025 (Part 44), which the effluent standards also use, or 20 ± 1 °C for 5 days under APHA 5210 B. In an Indian summer the room is often warmer than 27 °C, so the incubator needs cooling as well as heating. Keep it away from windows and heat sources, check its temperature every day, and seed and dilute samples consistently. A BOD analyser with digital heads records the readings automatically, which removes the daily manual reading and the mistakes that come with it; check that the method your consent or client names accepts its results.
