In pharma manufacturing, a weight isn’t just a number, it’s a record. Every active ingredient is dispensed by weight, every batch is made to a weighed formula, and every figure has to stand up when an auditor asks where it came from. A balance that drifts, or a reading someone copied down wrong, can put a whole batch on hold.
Hindustan Scale Company (HSCo), Mumbai, has been making weighing equipment since 1955. Where a pharma plant weighs, and with what
- Receipt and sampling – incoming drums and bags are weighed on stainless platform or floor scales, and samples go to QC on analytical and precision balances.
- Dispensing – precision and analytical balances for APIs and excipients, with a printer or PC link so each dispensed weight is recorded as it happens.
- Granulation, blending and coating – vessel and tank weighing with load cell modules under the vessel, and batch controllers that stop additions at the set weight.
- Packing – checkweighers reject any strip, bottle or carton outside its limits, and weigh-and-label machines label as they weigh.
- Warehouse and dispatch – pallet scales and platform scales for shipper cartons and pallets going out.
- QC and stability – moisture analysers, Karl Fischer titrators, HPLC, melting point apparatus, incubators and ovens, and calibration weights.

Choosing a dispensing balance without overbuying
The balance with the finest readability isn’t always the right one. What matters is the smallest quantity you’ll dispense and the tolerance your SOP allows on it. A 0.1 mg analytical balance is right for milligram quantities of an API, and wasted on 200 g of an excipient, where a 1 mg or 10 mg precision balance is faster and less fussy about draughts. Tell us your lightest and heaviest dispensed quantity and your tolerance, and we’ll size the balance to them.
Keeping the weighing record clean
Most weighing findings in an audit aren’t about the balance, they’re about the record: a figure copied wrongly, a missing check, a calibration weight with no certificate. HSCo balances and scales can print each reading or send it to a PC, and we supply IQ, OQ and PQ documents for the equipment we install. Pair that with a daily check using F2 or M1 weights and the record largely looks after itself.
