A patient who can’t stand, or a baby who won’t lie still, still has to be weighed accurately.

Weight, dosing and patient safety
When a dose is worked out per kilogram, an error in the weight becomes an error in the dose. Weigh every patient on a calibrated scale rather than asking their weight, use a wheelchair scale for those who can’t stand instead of estimating, and weigh babies on an infant scale with a hold function so a wriggle doesn’t change the reading. Check each scale weekly with a known weight and keep its stamp current.
