In a chemical plant, the recipe is written in kilograms. Reactors are charged by weight, additives go in by weight, and every drum, bag and IBC leaves with a declared weight on the label. One wrong addition can spoil a whole batch, and one short drum can cost you a customer.

Where a chemical plant weighs, and with what
- Raw material in – tankers and trucks cross the weighbridge, and bags and drums are checked on platform or pallet scales before they go to stores.
- Tank farm and silos – load cell mounting modules go under the legs of the tank, so you read the stock in kilograms or litres without dipping it.
- Batching and reactors – a batch weighing controller runs the additions to a stored recipe and switches valves and pumps when each ingredient reaches its weight.
- Filling and packing – bagging machines fill 10 to 50 kg bags, drum and IBC scales fill to weight, and a checkweigher rejects any pack that comes off the line short.
- Hazardous areas – explosion-proof style platform and pallet scales for zones with flammable vapour or dust.

Weighing in hazardous areas
Solvent stores, powder handling and some reactor floors are classified areas, and an ordinary scale has no business being there. HSCo supplies an explosion-proof style platform scale (PLCHQEXP, 500 or 1,000 kg) and an explosion-proof pallet scale (HSC-PWSEP). The zone and gas group differ from plant to plant, so we confirm the certification for your area with each order rather than promise one rating for everything. Why weigh a tank instead of measuring its level
A level sensor measures height and then guesses the weight from the tank’s shape and the liquid’s density. Foam, vapour, sludge at the bottom and a change of product all throw that guess off. Load cells under the legs weigh what is actually in the tank, whatever it is and whatever state it’s in. Reactors and blending tanks, where a wrong charge costs the most, are the best place to start.
Our mounting modules carry a support bolt that stops the tank tipping, and they bolt straight to the tank’s legs. For an existing tank we look at the legs, the pipework and the floor before we recommend a module, because stiff pipes connected to a weighed tank are the most common reason tank weighing reads wrong.

Most plants need tank and silo weighing for stock and batching, platform, drum and pallet scales for stores and dispatch, filling scales and checkweighers on the packing line, and balances, titrators and viscometers in the QC lab. Hazardous areas need explosion-proof models. HSCo supplies all of these.
We fit load cell mounting modules under its legs or supports. The tank weight then shows on an indicator or goes to your system as kilograms or litres. We check the legs, pipework and floor first, because rigid pipes attached to the tank are the usual cause of wrong readings.
