A spinning mill buys cotton by the bale and sells yarn by weight, a weaver is judged on fabric GSM, and a garment exporter’s shipment is checked carton by carton at the buyer’s warehouse. Moisture in cotton or yarn can add or hide several percent of weight, which is money one way or the other.

Testing GSM the way your buyer does
Your buyer will cut a round sample, weigh it and work out the grams per square metre, so do exactly the same before the fabric leaves. Use a sharp GSM cutter so the edge doesn’t fray, a precision scale under a draft shield, and samples from across the width and along the length of the roll. Condition the samples if your buyer does, because moisture changes the result.
Moisture and the weight of yarn
Cotton and many fibres pick up moisture from the air, so the same yarn weighs more in the monsoon than in winter. When you buy or sell by weight, that difference is real money. Check moisture on a sample with a moisture analyser before weighing a lot for invoicing, and agree with your buyer or supplier on how weights are corrected for it. It’s also the first thing to look at when a customer’s weight doesn’t match yours.
Carton weights for export shipments
Garment buyers often check carton weights against the packing list, and a carton that’s off raises questions about missing pieces. Weigh each carton on a scale with a printer, write the weight on the packing list from the print, and keep the printout. A scale that’s stamped and checked with a test weight each morning keeps the numbers beyond argument.
