Paper is sold by the tonne but judged by the gram. A mill sells reels by weight, but the customer buys GSM, and a reel that’s two grams light per square metre is a complaint waiting to happen. In between, pulpwood and waste paper arrive by the truckload, bales pile up in the yard, and the web on the machine has to run at the right tension.

Getting GSM right
GSM is simply the weight of one square metre of paper, and the test is simple too: cut a round sample of known area with a GSM cutter, weigh it on a precision scale, and multiply up. The two things that spoil it are a blunt cutter that frays the edge and a draughty scale. Our GSM kit pairs a round cutter with a precision digital scale under a draft shield, and works for paper, board, film and non-woven. Test samples from across the width of the reel, not just the edge.
Reel weights and invoicing
Most reels are invoiced on their weighed weight, so the dispatch scale is effectively your till. Weigh each reel on the same coil platform every time, with the core weight known, and print or send the figure straight to the invoice. A scale that’s checked each week with test weights, and stamped because it’s used for trade, keeps those invoices beyond argument. If a customer disputes a reel, the printed record and the GSM result from your lab usually settle it in minutes.
