A log that’s freshly cut can weigh far more than the same log dried, so a timber deal without a moisture reading is a guess. In the furniture factory, panels and finished pieces are weighed for shipping, and fittings are counted by the thousand.

Weight, moisture and a fair timber price
Fresh timber can carry a large share of its weight as water, and it loses that water as it dries. If you buy by weight, you want to know how much of it is wood. A pin-type wood moisture meter gives a reading in seconds on the log or board, set for the wood group you’re buying. Agree the moisture with the seller before you agree the price, and weigh on a checked scale.
Shipping furniture: weight and size
Furniture is bulky, and freight is often charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight worked out from the carton size. Weigh each packed piece on a platform scale and measure its carton with a laser distance meter, and you’ll know which one the transporter will charge on before the invoice arrives. It also helps to compare quotes from different transporters on the same figures.
