The HSCo HSCAXWS axle weighing system weighs a vehicle one axle at a time. It is a smaller version of the pit-type weighbridge: the vehicle’s axles cross the slim platform, and the microprocessor digital terminal shows each axle’s weight and adds them up to give the total vehicle weight. Transport authorities set a maximum load per axle, and crossing it is an offence. Overloading also wears out axles, drive shafts, tyres, steering and brakes, lengthens stopping distances and raises fuel use. Weighing each axle after loading lets you correct the load before the vehicle leaves.
