Keeping the counter scale honest
A jewellery scale is only as good as the table it sits on and the check it gets each morning. Keep it on a solid, level counter away from fans and doors, close the windshield for every weighing, and check it daily with a known weight. Scales used for sale must be Legal Metrology stamped, and keeping the stamp current is as important as the reading itself.
Checking purity by density
Gold is heavy, and alloys with less gold are lighter for the same size. A gold density meter weighs the piece in air and in water and works out its density, which indicates its purity. It’s quick and doesn’t damage the piece, which is why jewellers use it as a first check on old gold and bullion.
