Sugar pallet weight: how to check a full pallet before you sign for it

HSCo Digital Pallet Scale HPT with an orange indicator housing and black forks

To check sugar pallet weight without unloading the bags, lift the pallet on a pallet truck that has a scale in its forks and read the gross weight. Subtract the pallet, the empty bags and any wrapping, then divide by the bag count for the average net sugar per bag. The Digital Pallet Scale HPT from Hindustan Scale Company (HSCo) weighs and prints the gross weight in one lift [3].

Business Standard reported on 4 November 2026, in a PTI story, that retail sugar prices had risen by over ₹4 a kg in a month, to an average of ₹59.50 a kg [2]. The Department of Consumer Affairs listed the all-India average wholesale price of sugar at ₹5,553.41 a quintal on 4 November 2026, about ₹55.53 a kg [1].

How do you check sugar pallet weight without unloading the bags?

Use a pallet truck that weighs while it lifts. The HPT is a hand pallet truck with a weighing scale built into its forks [3]. You slide the forks under the pallet, pump the handle to lift it and read the weight on the digital indicator, with no floor scale, pit or ramp [3]. The HPT comes in 2,000 kg and 3,000 kg and reads in 2 kg steps [3].

  1. Weigh one empty pallet of the same type with its wrapping, then 50 empty bags of the kind on the pallet, on a platform scale whose marked minimum capacity is below each of those two weights. Divide the bags’ weight by 50 for the average empty bag.
  2. Park the HPT on a flat, firm floor. With the forks empty and lowered, check that the indicator shows zero in gross mode, with no tare set.
  3. Lift the loaded pallet, hold the truck still and note the settled gross weight.
  4. Estimated tare = pallet and wrapping + number of bags × average empty bag. Gross minus estimated tare is the estimated net sugar.
  5. Divide by the number of bags for the average per bag, and compare the total with the billed net weight.
  6. Print the gross weight on the indicator’s built-in thermal printer [3] and keep the slip with the bill.

What does a 2 kg reading step mean on a pallet of sugar?

On the HPT each step is 2 kg [3]. With ideal rounding and other errors ignored, a pallet with a true weight of 1,001 kg shows as either 1,000 kg or 1,002 kg. At the wholesale price of 4 November 2026 [1], one 2 kg step of sugar is worth about ₹111. The smallest shortage you can detect also depends on weighing error. For small shortages in single bags, weigh the bags one at a time on a platform scale reading in 50 g or 100 g, such as the PLCHQB [5].

How do you tell if a sugar delivery is short?

Compare the net sugar on the pallet with the net weight on the bill. In this worked example, a pallet is billed as 20 bags of 50 kg net, which is 1,000 kg of sugar. The pallet, the 20 empty bags and the wrapping are assumed to weigh 28 kg in all.

Under the assumed tare, the first row shows a one-step gap and the second a 22 kg gap, or 11 steps, an average of 1.1 kg a bag. Before you call either gap a shortage, allow for the scale’s weighing error and for variation in the tare. Then weigh a few bags singly on a platform scale reading in 50 g or 100 g [5], subtract the average empty bag from step 1, and note the light ones.

Does a pallet truck scale need Legal Metrology stamping?

Yes, if you buy or sell by its reading. Section 24 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 requires a weight or measure used in a transaction to be verified before it is put to use [6]. An electronic scale falls under Rule 27(2)(c) of the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, which sets 12 months as the normal periodic re-verification interval, and Rule 27(4) requires re-verification after a repair before the scale is used again [7]. The HPT product page states that it is approved by the Legal Metrology Department [3]. Our post on government stamping explains how stamping works.

Which HSCo scale fits a sugar godown?

Choose by where you weigh: as the pallet moves, at the dock, or bag by bag.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a pallet of sugar weigh?

A pallet of 20 bags of 50 kg net holds 1,000 kg of sugar. In our worked example, with an assumed 28 kg for the pallet, the empty bags and the wrapping, it weighs 1,028 kg gross. Subtract those 28 kg from the gross reading to find the net sugar. The HSCo Digital Pallet Scale HPT weighs up to 2,000 kg or 3,000 kg, in 2 kg steps [3].

Can a pallet truck scale print the weight?

Yes. The HSCo Digital Pallet Scale HPT has a digital indicator with a built-in thermal printer, so the weight of each pallet comes out on a slip [3]. Keep the slip with the purchase bill, so the weight you paid for and the weight you received sit in one file.

How often must an electronic pallet scale be re-stamped?

An electronic scale used in trade falls under Rule 27(2)(c) of the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, which sets 12 months as the normal periodic re-verification interval [7]. Rule 27(4) requires re-verification after a repair, before the scale is used again [7]. The Delhi Department of Weights and Measures lists one year for platform scales and electronic balances [8].
