Steel coil weighing: how to pick a scale that holds the coil steady

For steel coil weighing, use a scale that holds the round coil still and reads in steps fine enough for what the steel costs. A floor platform with cradle rails keeps a coil from rolling, and a crane scale weighs it on the hook. At ₹77,620 a tonne, every 10 kg of hot-rolled coil is worth ₹776.20 [1].

The Ministry of Steel reported on 5 November 2026 that 2 mm hot-rolled (HR) coil averaged ₹77,620 a tonne in October 2026, up 2.0% from ₹76,085 in September and 31.6% higher than a year earlier [1]. The price includes GST and averages second-fortnight prices in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai [1]. The same release put finished steel consumption for April to October 2026 at 99.3 million tonnes, 7.5% more than in the same months of 2025 [1].

How much is a weighing error on a steel coil worth?

At the October average, one kilogram of HR coil is worth ₹77.62 [1]. Divide the price per tonne by 1,000 to get the price per kilogram, then multiply by the weight difference.

Value of a weight difference = price per tonne ÷ 1,000 × difference in kg

Weight differenceValue at ₹77,620 a tonne
0.5 kg₹38.81
1 kg₹77.62
2 kg₹155.24
5 kg₹388.10
10 kg₹776.20

The same 10 kg was worth ₹704.48 at the August average of ₹70,448 a tonne, so the price rise alone added ₹71.72 to it by October [1]. A whole 5 tonne coil at the October average is worth ₹3,88,100.

Why does a steel coil need a cradle on the scale?

A coil lying with its centre hole horizontal rests on its curved outer surface and can roll on a flat platform while you weigh it. At Hindustan Scale Company (HSCo), our PLCHQC coil weighing scale has two cradle rails that hold round loads steady, so the coil sits between them while the weight is read [2]. The same rails hold cable and wire drums and paper reels [2].

The PLCHQC platform is low-profile and ramp-type, so coils can be placed and removed quickly, and it stands on four IP68 load cells [2]. The top is a mild-steel (MS) chequered plate, with a stainless-steel top available [2].

Which steel coil weighing capacity and platform size do you need?

Start from your heaviest coil, then make sure its width and diameter fit on the platform. The PLCHQC comes in 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 tonne capacities, with standard platforms of 1 × 1 m, 1.2 × 1.2 m and 1.5 × 1.5 m, and custom sizes [2].

  1. Find the weight of your heaviest coil and choose the capacity above it: 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 t [2].
  2. Measure the widest coil and the largest outside diameter you handle, and choose a platform they fit on, or ask for a custom size [2].
  3. Check the least count, the step the display moves in. The PLCHQC reads in 0.5, 1, 2 or 5 kg steps, depending on capacity, and the table above gives the value of each step [2].
  4. Decide between floor and pit mounting. The scale is floor-mounted as standard, with a pit-mounted option [2].
  5. List where the weight has to go. Printer, RS232, USB, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are options [2].

Should you weigh a coil on the floor or on the crane hook?

Weigh on the crane hook when an overhead crane already moves the coil, and on the floor when the coil is set down for dispatch or checking. The HSCo CRHJD5K crane scale has a capacity of 5,000 kg, and the coil together with any sling or lifter hung below the scale must stay within it. It adds an external jumbo LED display, so the crane operator and the people on the floor can read the weight from far away [3].

The CRHJD5K reads in 2 kg steps, a hand remote tares it from a distance, and it is stamped by the Legal Metrology department [3]. At the October HR coil average, one 2 kg step is worth ₹155.24 [1]. Before you buy any crane scale, our post on how to choose a crane scale lists other checks, such as a metal casing, a remote for tare and Legal Metrology stamping.

Which HSCo scale fits a steel coil store?

For coils on the floor, choose the PLCHQC; for coils on the crane hook, the CRHJD5K [2, 3]. For loads up to 1,000 kg that sit flat on a plate, the PLCHQB platform scale reads in 50 g or 100 g steps [4].

Frequently asked questions

What was the price of HR coil per tonne in India in October 2026?

The Ministry of Steel reported that 2 mm HR coil averaged ₹77,620 a tonne in October 2026, including GST [1]. The figure averages second-fortnight prices in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai, and it was 2.0% above the September average of ₹76,085 [1]. At ₹77,620 a tonne, one kilogram of HR coil is worth ₹77.62.

How do you weigh a steel coil without it rolling?

Weigh a steel coil on a platform with cradle rails, or lift it with a crane scale. The HSCo PLCHQC coil weighing scale has two cradle rails that hold round loads steady while they are weighed, in capacities from 1 to 10 tonnes [2]. The HSCo CRHJD5K crane scale has a capacity of 5,000 kg on the crane hook, and the coil plus any sling or lifter below it must stay within that [3].

What least count does a coil weighing scale have?

The HSCo PLCHQC coil weighing scale reads in 0.5, 1, 2 or 5 kg steps, depending on capacity [2]. At the October 2026 HR coil average of ₹77,620 a tonne [1], a 1 kg step on a coil weighing scale is worth ₹77.62 and a 5 kg step is worth ₹388.10. Ask for the capacity and least count together when you order a coil weighing scale.

Can a coil weighing scale weigh cable drums and paper reels?

Yes. The HSCo PLCHQC coil weighing scale weighs round loads such as cable and wire drums and paper reels, as long as the load sits in its cradle rails and stays within the capacity you choose [2]. The PLCHQC comes in 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 tonne capacities, with standard platforms of 1 × 1 m, 1.2 × 1.2 m and 1.5 × 1.5 m, and custom sizes are available [2].
