Soybean moisture at the MSP centre: how much water dries off a wet quintal

Soybean moisture above 12% is weight that dries off when the grain is dried to 12%, the Fair Average Quality limit reported in November 2024 for soybean bought at MSP [3, 4]. If only water leaves, 100 kg net at 14% weighs about 97.73 kg at 12%. Priced at the 2026-27 yellow soybean MSP of ₹5,708 a quintal [2, 8], the 2.27 kg lost equals about ₹130 of soybean.

The Free Press Journal reported on 15 October 2026 that Maharashtra had planned more than 950 procurement centres for the kharif 2026-27 season, for soybean, tur, moong and urad [1]. It reported a planned storage capacity of 15.28 lakh tonnes [1].

What is the moisture limit for soybean at MSP centres?

ANI quoted a 15 November 2024 government office memorandum giving 12% as the prescribed Fair Average Quality moisture limit for soybean [3]; Rural Voice reported the same limit [4]. They reported that the same order allowed up to 15% moisture in kharif 2024-25 only, as a one-time step, with extra losses borne by the state governments [3, 4]. Confirm the 2026-27 norms at your centre.

How much weight does soybean lose when it dries to 12%?

The calculation assumes drying removes only water, so the dry part of the grain stays the same. Use net weight without sacks and moisture on a wet basis; confirm this in your meter’s manual. The formula applies at 12% or wetter.

Weight at 12% = net weight now × (100 − moisture now) ÷ 88

The 88 is the dry share of soybean at 12% moisture. Take 100 kg at 14%: 100 × 86 ÷ 88 = 97.73 kg. So 2.27 kg must leave to reach 12%. The table prices that lost weight at the soybean MSP of ₹57.08 a kg, which is ₹5,708 a quintal [2].

Worked example: weight lost when 100 kg of soybean dries to 12% moisture, with that weight priced at the 2026-27 yellow soybean MSP.

Twenty quintals (2,000 kg net) at 14% moisture hold about 45.45 kg of water above the 12% line, which equals about ₹2,595 of soybean at MSP, if no grain is lost while drying.

How do you check soybean moisture before you go to the centre?

Test a sample at your godown before you load, so there is time to dry a wet lot.

  1. Use a meter set or calibrated for soybean, and follow its manual for sample size.
  2. Look at and smell the bags first. Keep any bag that looks wet, feels warm or smells musty apart from the lot, and have its quality checked on its own.
  3. Draw a representative sample from each bag and test that bag’s sample on its own. A 1996 GTZ grain storage manual hosted on FAO’s website says moisture is tested on these primary samples, because damp bags can no longer be recognised in a combined sample [11].
  4. Let sun-warmed or cold grain come to room temperature in a closed container first. Purdue Extension’s moisture-meter fact sheet says electronic testers read hot grain low when it has not reached equilibrium, and read cold grain high when moisture condenses on it in warmer air [9].
  5. Take three readings of each sample and use their average, as the same fact sheet advises [9].
  6. If any bag reads above the moisture limit notified for your season, dry that soybean thin on a clean floor and test again.

A halogen moisture analyzer weighs a small sample, dries it with a halogen heater and shows the moisture content in minutes [7]. Check its soybean method against your lab’s reference method first.

Why must the scale at a soybean centre be stamped?

Section 24 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, headed Verification and stamping of weight or measure, requires a weight or measure used in a transaction to be verified before it is put to use [5]. Our guide to government stamping explains stamping and re-verification.

At MSP rates a small error adds up. If a scale reads 100 g light on each 50 kg bag, the farmer loses ₹5.71 a bag at ₹57.08 a kg [2]. Across the 40 bags in a 20 quintal lot, that is about ₹228.

Which HSCo scale and moisture meter fit a soybean centre?

A bag scale should take a full bag and show the farmer the reading. Use the analyzer for your own checks before you sell. Part XII of the Eighth Schedule of the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, in force from 1 January 2026, sets type approval requirements for grain moisture meters used in commercial transactions of cereal grains and oilseeds [10]. That Part covers meters that measure a fixed sample by electrical or optical sensing; it does not specifically cover drying methods, which may still qualify if they meet its requirements [10]. Ask for proof of approval for the exact instrument before its reading decides payment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the moisture limit for selling soybean at MSP?

ANI quoted a November 2024 government memorandum giving 12% as the prescribed Fair Average Quality moisture limit for soybean bought at MSP [3]; Rural Voice reported the same limit [4]. Both reported a one-time relaxation to 15% for kharif 2024-25 only [3, 4]. Confirm your season’s notified soybean moisture norm at the procurement centre before you sell.

How much does 1 quintal of soybean at 15% moisture weigh at 12%?

One quintal (100 kg net) of soybean at 15% moisture weighs about 96.59 kg at 12%, using net weight × 85 ÷ 88 and assuming only water leaves. The 3.41 kg lost equals about ₹195 of soybean at the 2026-27 yellow soybean MSP of ₹5,708 a quintal [2, 8], if no grain is lost while drying.

What is the MSP of soybean for 2026-27?

The MSP of yellow soybean for the 2026-27 kharif marketing season is ₹5,708 a quintal, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on 13 May 2026 [2, 8]. This is ₹380 more than the 2025-26 soybean MSP of ₹5,328 [8, 1]. At ₹5,708 a quintal, each kilogram of soybean is worth ₹57.08.

Does a soybean procurement centre need a stamped weighing scale?

Yes. Section 24 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, headed Verification and stamping of weight or measure, requires a weight or measure used in a transaction to be verified before use [5]. A soybean procurement centre pays by weight, so its platform scale comes under that rule. The HSCo PLCHQB platform scale is stamped by the Legal Metrology department [6].
